Your refrigerator temperature needs to be cold enough to preserve your food, but not so cold that the appliance wastes energy or causes items to freeze. So what is the optimal temperature that you should keep your fridge at?
The ideal refrigerator temperature is actually just above freezing – or between 35 and 38 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temp is higher than 38 degrees, this will cause food to spoil faster, and you’ll risk food poisoning. Anything below 35 degrees is too close to freezing.
Keep in mind the following refrigerator temperature tips:
- Cleaning your fridge’s air vents on a regular basis will promote their ability to maintain proper appliance temperatures.
- It will take about 24 hours for any adjustments you make to your refrigerator’s temperature settings to take full effect.
- Your refrigerator temperature should never rise above 40 degrees – otherwise, illness-causing bacteria may grow and multiply in your food.
- You can use an appliance thermometer to monitor your refrigerator temperature.
